If you’re like most people in today’s society you probably have a Facebook account. People have been using this social networking site for a variety of applications – from business or work, advertising, or just having a good time socializing with family and friends. Social networking perhaps was once considered a fad, but in today’s hustle-and-bustle society social networking has become a necessity from our every day lives. But since June of 2009, Facebook introduced a popular gaming application on its site called FarmVille. Since its introduction, FarmVille has gained momentum and includes more than 80 million active monthly users – that’s almost 7 times more than the popular MMORPG World of Warcraft!FarmVille was created by Zynga and quite possibly owes it popularity thanks to Facebook. Since its inception other games similar to FarmVille have been creeping up onto the social networking giant. By far though I believe that FarmVille is the largest of all. Free to join and extremely fun to play; the game itself is a virtual world where you create an avatar which allows players to manage a virtual farm by planting, growing and harvesting virtual crops, trees, and livestock. Like your crops your livestock will require special care in order not to lose them. Game progress allows you opportunities to purchase more land to increase the size of your farm.
Your farm starts out small, with little money, and with few resources. The object at this point is to sew seeds, grow crops and harvest these crops for sale to earn money. As you earn money you can buy different seed crops and harvest those when they’re ready. This point in the game is probably most crucial since your success is based upon your ability to harvest your crops on time. Wait too long and your entire crop can be lost. This is a key factor to the games playability and success. You don’t want to be planting crops that will be ready to harvest in a day’s time if you’re leaving for a 3 day weekend trip. Planning around your real world schedule will offer you success in the virtual world.FarmVille is a real-time interactive simulation, and part of your success in the game requires you to find and make new neighbors through requests sent via Facebook to your social networking group. This won’t take long however, once your friends realize you’re playing FarmVille they will be sending virtual neighbor requests to you; sharing their harvests; and asking for help to tend to their animals and crops. All of these actions helps players to earn coins, awards and experience which will help you along in the beginning stages of the game.
Earning special rewards is all part of the game. Once you have a handle on the game mechanics you’ll be planting seedlings and harvesting crops and sending out requests for specially needed items from your neighbors.Overall FarmVille’s social community is a fantastic way for people to meet new people online and have fun while doing it. The nice part about the game is it’s non-violent and even children as young as 7 can grasp the mechanics of the game fairly quickly. This is definitely a game that the whole family where the whole family can get together and help each other out.
